The same power that came upon the early disciples has now come upon us enabling us to be witnesses for Christ! And, we must fully realize that the Spirit of Jesus has come upon us in the Sacraments of Baptism, in Confirmation and every time we receive Him in the Eucharist. First we must experience, we must encounter Christ in a personal way. That’s everywhere! In every encounter and in every situation! Am I being a Christian witness everywhere?īut like the disciples who could only be His witnesses because they experienced the Risen Lord, because they personal witnessed Him themselves, and only by and through His Spirit, the same is true for us. We are to be His witnesses in the way we live and in the words that we speak. We are to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth, meaning wherever we go. He was telling them that His work must continue through them…And so, if we are “God-lovers”, if we consider ourselves His follower (His disciple) then the mission of spreading the Gospel message has been entrusted to us. Now the mission of spreading the Good News that He rose from the dead and made a way into heaven for those who believe in Him is now left to them. Then the scripture said, “He was lifted up and a cloud took Him from their sight.” What Jesus was telling His disciples before He ascended up was that His physical work on earth was done. Luke tells Theophilus that Jesus informed His disciples that they “would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them and they were to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth”. So if we are a “God-lover” than these words are addressed to us also. So, put together these words and all of scripture are addressed to a “God-lover”. If we break this name down from the original language “Theo” meaning God and “Philus” meaning lover. Luke starts out by addressing his words to someone named “Theophilus”. Luke and is a continuation of his Gospel. The 1 st reading from sacred scripture was from the 1 st chapter & first verses from the Acts of the Apostles.

We focus on what this meant to the disciples 2000 plus years ago but more importantly what His Ascension means for us His disciples today. And so this Sunday we focus on the day that Jesus, after appearing to His disciples alive as the Risen Lord for 40 days, ascended up to heaven.
most dioceses transfer this Solemnity to today on the 7 th Sunday of Easter. The Ascension of the Lord is celebrated 40 days after Easter which would have been this past Thursday.
